Language Arts
In Language Arts, we will begin to learn about the letters of the alphabet. We will focus on the sound each letter makes and words that begin with the letter of the week. A very good website where your child can review letters and their sounds is at http://www.starfall.com/. When we read stories we will discuss the parts of a book; the children will learn to identify the front and back cover, where the title is, and the jobs of an author and illustrator are. TK students will begin writing their names the "Kindergarten Way", first letter is capitalized and the rest are lowercase letters. When writing, students will learn we start from the top of the line and go to the bottom and left to right. In addition, we will also learn how to read and spell the following color words (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, and white) and number words (one , two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten). Please review and reinforce color and number words at home.
Sight Words
Students in Tk are going to be exposed to sight words throughout the school year. As part of our literacy program, your child will encounter sight words frequently in print. These are words that children use frequently in their writing. Learning these words by sight will assist your child in becoming a stronger reader and writer. Help your child learn these words and encourage them to practice the words at home.
